Stryj (now Stryi)
This is the street where Koffler lived in his childhood, and he was most likely born there. It was well known in Stryj for its tasteful stylish family houses, most of which had beautiful gardens. It was lined with fine chestnut trees, which gave it its distinctive character.
Previously known as Wałowa Street, it was named in 1908 after Graf Andrzej Kazimierz Potocki, Statthalter (governor) of the Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria from 1903, who fell victim to political assassination. Flour-and-crop merchant Izaak Schönfeld Jr, the would-be composer’s grandfather, had his trade office at 16 Potockiego St., whereas Dr Salomon Roth, Koffler’s would-be father-in-law, moved from Żurawno to Stryj around 1918 and settled at 11 Potockiego Street.
