In his 1923 Curriculum vitae, Józef Koffler mentions taking up the posts of pianist-repetiteur and choir director at Vienna’s Bürgertheater, which operated (from 1905) at 13 Vordere Zollamtsstraße (third district).
The building was designed by architects Franz von Krauß and Josef Tölk. The wall paintings were created by Eduard Veith. The theater auditorium accommodated over 1,300 seats (both seated and standing).
The theater specialized in operetta repertoire, musical comedies, and lighter theatrical productions. Opera performances also took place occasionally. The repertoire for 1922 included Jacques Offenbach's Orphée aux enfers and La belle Hélène, Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus, and Georges Bizet's Carmen.
During the period of Koffler’s employment at that theatre, it was directed by Oscar Fronz, and the orchestra was conducted by Richard Fronz. Koffler’s name is not listed on any known posters (not surprisingly, since he was not the conductor). The building was pulled down in 1960, and the Zentralsparkasse erected in its place, very close to Wien Mitte (Landstraße) underground station.
