At the request of Yevgeny Vigilev, choreographer and author of the libretto, Koffler arranged the music for this ballet, the first one to be performed at Lviv’s State Opera and Ballet Theatre. A reviewer wrote after the premiere:
The spectacle’s new compact dramaturgical construction called for revisions in the music. The composer Koffler, a Lviv Conservatory professor, therefore remade the prologue and added a new, entirely original epilogue, as well as many additional musical numbers, such as the “Serenade” from the opera Don Quixote. He managed completely to fuse the newly introduced material with the original
(Dneprov, ‘Біля старої таверни… На репетиції балету „Дон Кіхот”’ [Near an Old Tavern…At a Rehearsal for the Ballet Don Quixote], Вільна Україна, 20 Oct. 1940).
Vasyl Barvinsky mentions two other numbers inserted by Koffler into the spectacle: the dance of drunken Sancho Pansa, and a Gypsy dance. ‘When composing these extra numbers, Koffler naturally had to stick to Minkus’ overall musical style and language. They nevertheless betray Koffler’s greater mastery’ (V. Barvinsky, ‘“Дон-Кіхот” у Львівському державному театрі опери та балету’ [Don Quixote at Lviv State Opera and Ballet Theatre], Вільна Україна, 1 Nov. 1940).
