The K.K. Gymnasium in Stryj on an old postcard (Polona)
The secondary school that Józef Koffler attended was founded in 1873 as the highest-level Realschule in the Austro-Hungarian educational system and transformed into a gymnasium (secondary school) ‘with obligatory drawing classes’ in 1880. The school building was situated in Tadeusza Kościuszki Street (renamed as Józefa Piłsudskiego Street in 1935).
and their numbers was quickly growing, to reach the record figure of 920 pupils in 1907, when Koffler began his first schoolyear. The school’s director was Julian Dolnicki, replaced in 1911 by Jan Tralka.
It was a dynamic, well-equipped institution with a library, reading room, as well as the following facilities (data for 1912): biology and physics rooms, chemistry lab, a geography-and-history room, and an archaeological studio.
