Editorial and journalistic work was an important aspect of Józef Koffler’s professional activity in 1926–1938. He started contributing to periodicals after settling permanently in Lwów in 1924.

Though Muzyk Wojskowy was primarily catering for military band leaders, its contents went significantly beyond that social group’s scope of interest and concerned various problems of music history and theory. Koffler contributed to this periodical throughout its brief history (1926–1929), starting with No. 3 (when he was introduced as a contributor by the editors).

Koffler’s contributions to Warsaw’s Muzyka (a periodical published in 1924–1938) were not numerous (seven in total, printed in 1930–1936). These were: two articles, a letter to the editor, two responses to the monthly’s questionnaires, a polemic, and a report. This was a time when Koffler edited two periodicals of his own (Orkiestra and later also Echo).

Koffler only contributed three texts to Kwartalnik Muzyczny (a periodical published in 1928–1933 in Warsaw). These were: two extensive reviews of German-language books by Egon Wellesz (Koffler’s teacher at the University of Vienna) and Hermann Scherchen, as well a paper on diatonic modulation.

Józef Koffler is the only Polish graduate of Vienna’s Institute of Musicology to have become editor in chief of music periodicals (apart from him, Zdzisław Jachimecki was responsible for two issues of Rozprawy i Notatki Muzykologiczne). Koffler edited two monthlies. First of them was monthly Orkiestra (1930–1938).

Published in Lwów simultaneously with Orkiestra in 1936–1937, Echo was 'a monthly dedicated to the musical culture of Lwów’. Its editorial office was located in Koffler’s private flat at 5 Chmielowskiego Street. Unlike the nationwide Orkiestra, Echo was mostly a local Lwów journal.
