Palais Ehrbar was erected at 28 Mühlgasse (fourth district) in 1877 in the Italian Neo-Renaissance style. It housed the Ehrbar piano factory and a concert hall known as Ehrbar-Saal, seating four hundred people.
Artists who performed in that venue included Anton Rubinstein, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, Pietro Mascagni, Gustav Mahler, Max Reger, and Arnold Schönberg. The adjacent building at 30 Mühlgasse, erected in 1911, housed (from 1913) the Konservatorium für Musik und Dramatische Kunst (est. 1906 by Eugenia Patonay and her husband Hermann Lutwak as the Lutwak-Patonay Musikschule). The Konservatorium held its public concerts at the Ehrbar-Saal, which was connected with the music school’s building.
The programme included Koffler’s folksong arrangements from the collection of Forty Folksongs (Lwów, ca 1925) as well as pieces by such composers as Béla Bartók, Ladislav Vycpálek, and Ernst Křenek. The Polish songs were sung by Lola Urbach, Křenek’s choral settings of Austrian folksongs – by the Kaufmännischer Gesangsverein. The pianists were Ernst Křenek and Karl Lahr.
