Staged in 1927 at Lwów’s Nowości Theatre by Dawid Herman, the father of Poland’s modern Jewish scene and the spiritus movens of the so-called Vilnius troupe. For this production, Koffler composed ‘a special music illustration based on Jewish and Polish motifs’ (Chwila, 13 Aug. 1927). The sets were created by Zygmunt Balk, costumes – by Ludwik Lille.
The play recounts a folk legend about a handsome young tailor who agreed to be buried alive in order not to succumb to his lust for the daughter of a rich landowner.
