Maciej Gołąb surmises that the Violin Concerto was in fact a prematurely announced work-in-progress whose sketches were later used for Capriccio, Op. 18 for violin and piano. This is corroborated by Alfred Plohn’s information (‘Josef Koffler. Ein junger polnischer Komponist’, Signale für die musikalische Welt 23/24, 5 June 1933, 439) that the Concerto consisted of three movements (Toccata, Variations on the Theme of a Polish Folksong, and Finale). It can be observed that the musical properties of the Capriccio suggest its classification among works of toccata-like character.
