The Ministry’s seat at 25 Jana Chrystiana Szucha Street in Warsaw, designed in 1925 by Prof. Zdzisław Mączeński, head of the Ministry’s School Construction Department, is an outstanding example of public building architecture in Poland between the World Wars.
The edifice stands out for its austere monumentalism and high furnishing and interior detail standards. The Art Deco interiors were designed by Prof. Wojciech Jastrzębowski of Warsaw’s School of Fine Arts.
which met in one of the Ministry’s rooms in March 1932. This occasion was commemorated by one of the few group photographs featuring Koffler known to us. The other persons in the photo are Witold Maliszewski, Stanisław Niewiadomski, Jan Głowacki, Stanisław Wiechowicz, Karol Szymanowski, Mateusz Gliński, and Tadeusz Joteyko. In 1939–1945, the former Ministry building became the Gestapo secret police and SD security force headquarters, with a detention centre and interrogation rooms located in its basement. In 1945 the edifice was restored to its original function, and it still houses the Ministry of National Education.
